Restoring to Freedom

My Story
My story is one of struggle, pain, failure, healing, and redemption. For much of my life, I found myself trapped in patterns I couldn’t seem to escape. Looking back, I can see how deeply my childhood experiences, instability, and unresolved wounds shaped the choices I made. Through faith, the support of others, and a willingness to face the truth about myself, I eventually found a path to freedom. I share my story today not just to be honest about where I’ve been, but to offer hope to anyone who feels stuck, broken, or alone in their own journey.
Where It Began
I grew up in a deeply unstable and dysfunctional home. As the oldest of four children, I carried responsibilities that were far beyond what a child should have to bear. At thirteen years old, I started working to help support my family. We moved constantly—sometimes once or twice a year—which meant I was almost always the new kid at school. By the time I graduated, I had attended ten different high schools. Many of those moves were across the country and were connected to my mother’s mental illness.
Life at home was filled with tension, conflict, and unpredictability. During those years, I experienced neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse, and sexual abuse at the hands of a step-grandfather when I was eight years old. I was also exposed to pornography at a young age through my father, and those experiences followed me into my teenage years, shaping beliefs and behaviors that I would struggle with for decades.

A Turning Point
Everything began to change when I was sixteen years old. I was introduced to Jesus Christ and accepted Him as my Lord and Savior. My faith was genuine, and my life began to change in many ways. Yet even as I grew spiritually, I continued to wrestle with unhealthy sexual behaviors and desires that had become deeply rooted in my life.
Along the way, God placed several men in my life who invested in me. Three different youth pastors, each from different places we lived, provided guidance, encouragement, and stability during some very difficult years. Their influence eventually helped lead me to a Christian university. For a season, the structure and accountability of that environment interrupted some of my destructive patterns.
Struggle and Consequences
Before my senior year of college, I married my college sweetheart after only six months of dating. I truly believed I was leaving my past behind. But only three months into our marriage, my old behaviors resurfaced. What I thought I had overcome was still very much alive beneath the surface. My addiction continued for many years and followed me well into my forties, ultimately leading to my wife divorcing me.
That season became one of the darkest times of my life. After several days of seriously considering suicide, I attended a church service where I had a profound encounter with Jesus. In that moment, God met me in my brokenness and began healing wounds that had been buried since childhood. It was more than an emotional experience—it was the beginning of real transformation. Over the next eighteen months, my ex-wife saw genuine changes in my life and behavior. Eventually, she chose to remarry me.

Choosing Recovery
For more than five years, I maintained sexual sobriety. Then, after our daughter graduated from high school, our lives entered another season of transition. I drifted away from church and gradually returned to old behaviors. I entered into a three-year affair and once again found myself living a life that conflicted with everything I believed.
Yet even in the midst of those choices, I could not escape the pain and emptiness they produced. One Sunday morning, I found myself at the altar making a complete surrender to God. I stopped trying to manage my life on my own terms and fully committed myself to Him. My wife, who had shown incredible grace and perseverance, forgave me once again. From that point forward, life became a journey of healing, restoration, and growth unlike anything I had previously experienced.
A New Understanding
A mentor later shared something with me that changed my understanding of recovery. He told me that while I had experienced significant emotional healing, I had never truly addressed my addiction. That insight led me into deeper recovery work with other men who had faced similar struggles.
Through that process, I came to understand that my addiction was never really about sex. At its core, it was about much deeper issues—control, power, ego, and an attempt to numb pain that I didn’t know how to face. Growing up, I had very little control over my circumstances, and much of my life became an unhealthy effort to gain the power and significance I felt I lacked. Understanding those roots became a critical part of my healing.

Living in Freedom
While I caused pain and damage along the way, that understanding helped me find lasting freedom. Today, I have been sexually sober for more than twenty-four years. I am no longer bound by addiction or imprisoned by shame, guilt, and loneliness. Instead, I live with honesty, integrity, gratitude, and a genuine love for life.
My passion now is helping others discover the same freedom that was given to me. I want people to know that no matter how long they’ve struggled, no matter how many times they’ve failed, change is possible. Healing is possible. Freedom is
possible. And redemption is real.
