The Twelve Steps are not just for those struggling with addiction—they offer timeless principles that are applicable to everyone. Whether a person is battling a specific addiction or simply navigating the challenges of life, these steps provide a pathway toward greater honesty, healing, and personal growth. For those who follow Jesus Christ, the Twelve Steps can also serve as a practical framework for developing a deeper, more intimate relationship with our Savior.
As we work through the steps, we begin to gain a clearer understanding of who we truly are. While we may sometimes deceive others, the person we most often deceive is ourselves. Looking honestly at our hearts can be intimidating. We may fear what we will discover or feel ashamed of the mistakes, wounds, and hidden struggles that have shaped us.
To protect ourselves from pain, we often retreat into comfortable routines, hiding behind masks or emotional armor. These defenses may shield us for a time, but they also prevent us from experiencing genuine healing, authentic relationships, and spiritual freedom.
The good news is that God’s love is not dependent on our performance or our past. No matter what we have done or what we continue to struggle with, His love remains constant and unconditional. As we come to understand His grace, we can begin to extend that same grace to ourselves. Self-compassion is not self-indulgence; it is recognizing our worth as people created and deeply loved by God. When we embrace His mercy, we become better equipped to remove our masks, face the truth with courage, and continue growing into the people He created us to be.
The Twelve Steps of Sexaholics Anonymous
- We admitted that we were powerless over lust—that our lives had become unmanageable.
- Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
- Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
- Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
- Admitted to God, ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
- Were entirely ready to Have God remove all these defects of character.
- Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
- Made a list of all persons we have harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
- Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
- Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
- Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry it out.
- Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to sexaholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
